History
The genetic material used to breed Monte Claro and other varieties was introduced to Venezuela in the 1970s under the supervision of Dr. Erasmo Pérez Nieto and his team at the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agrícolas (INIA). The material was cultivated and evaluated in El Trompillo in the state of Miranda at Táchira, an experimental field site, using the pedigree method.

In 1980, this project was assumed by Dr. Marcos Sayago and his technical team, who took responsibility of the project and installed trials with the same pool of materials, introducing them in different locations across the country. There, they multiplied and evaluated the cultivars with various researchers located in different provinces.

In the 1990s, Dr. José Bustamente was appointed by Dr. Sayago to oversee the project and the historical data produced under the genetic improvement program. As a plant breeder, Dr. Bustamente improved the rigor of the program and intensified the selection processes—he installed multiple trials at the national level with the materials of highest interest and those that served different agronomic purposes.

In 2008, M.Sc Bilal El Ayoubi was recruited by the institute to assume responsibility for this project, and he installed demonstration plots with the purpose of providing stability and producing genetically conforming planting material for INIA centers across Venezuela producing selected seed. During this stage of the project, the Monte Claro variety emerged from a selection of elite materials that exhibited varying levels of tolerance to rust.

Of these materials, Monte Claro was identified as the variety with tolerance to rust, high productivity potential, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stressors, which fit the current and future needs of farmers. In 2013, the variety was patented and released and has since been promoted within Venezuela’s production systems.

Today, Monte Claro is an important regional variety and has gained recognition for its quality and yield potential. The variety has won several awards to this effect. For example, in 2023, Monte Claro was recognized at the second annual International Meeting of Venezuelan Specialty Coffee, an event called EICEV.
